  • Simple Planet To Pursue Halal Certification For Cell-Based Food Products💪 Simple Planet announced its plan to pursue Halal certification for its cell-based food products to expand into the global Halal market. A month ago, Simple Planet signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Halal Science Center (HSC) at Chulalongkorn University in Thailand to collaborate on Halal certification for cell-based food products and their global market expansion.  Additionally, the company successfully developed an edible, serum-free culture medium using probiotics-derived metabolites, laying the groundwork for obtaining Halal certification for cell-based food products and ingredients. Further boosting these efforts, the Korea Muslim Federation (KMF) Halal Committee recently issued a Fatwa recognizing cell-based food products and ingredients as Halal, accelerating Simple Planet’s entry into the Halal market.     🇰🇷 FoodTech 500 alum presents innovation that would reduce the cost of cell-based food production. South Korean alternative protein company Simple Planet developed a patented, serum-free cell culture medium designed to drastically reduce production costs in cell-based food, biopharmaceuticals, and regenerative medicine. This innovation, using probiotics recycling to replace costly and ethically problematic fetal bovine serum (FBS), is slated for global launch in 2025. Successful trials with global research institutions have demonstrated enhanced myoblast cell proliferation and maintained normal cell morphology, validating the medium's effectiveness. Simple Planet has also developed specialized formulations for specific cell types, including a bovine myoblast-specific medium for optimized performance. Halal refers to food certified for consumption by Muslims in accordance with Islamic law. This market is expanding rapidly, with the global Muslim population exceeding 1.9 billion and the halal market estimated at $2 trillion (approximately 2,883 trillion KRW). Simple Planet is also laying the groundwork for halal certification and global commercialization of cell-based foods. The company recently signed an MOU with the Halal Science Center at Chulalongkorn University in Thailand and successfully developed an edible, serum-free cell culture medium. Notably, Simple Planet’s serum-free cell culture medium is gaining attention as a solution to the ethical and environmental issues associated with conventional media while also reducing production costs.     On March 6, the "Bio-based Future Food Industry Committee 2025 Annual General Meeting and Industry Seminar" was held at EL Tower in Seoul. At the event, Simple Planet CEO Dominic Jeong stated that the council aims to foster the bio-future food ecosystem by collaborating with member companies across R&D, regulatory strategies, and market expansion. He also expressed his commitment to strengthening global competitiveness.
